Trial of Alexander T. Wolf
Today our reading class took part in the trial of Alexander T. Wolf. Our class has been learning about point of view in literature. As one of the lessons, students compared and contrasted the point of view in the classic tale of the Three Little Pigs and the book, The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka. Below are some photos of the two teams: (Team Pig, Team Wolf) that includes lawyers, defendant, witnesses and expert witnesses as well as our jury and judge!

Dear Families,
My reading class will
be participating in the Global Read Aloud Project! We will be reading The One and Only Ivan by Katherine
Applegate and sharing our thinking about the book with other classrooms from
across the world. We will be connecting with classrooms in Florida , Texas , and
Saskatchewan , Canada
to name a few.
We will be using a primary form
of electronic communication, Edmodo to share with other students. Students will share questions, answers, and
thinking using on http://www.edmodo.com a safe social learning network designed
specifically for classrooms. Students are not able to join groups unless they
have been given a code, so only those teachers who I have connected with and
shared our code with can join our discussion group. In addition, we will
holding Skype sessions to discuss the book as a class and share activities and projects
we are working on. We are ecstatic about this project and
the learning ahead. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me! Mrs. Burns

Open House Information
This is a copy of an e-mail that I sent out today if you were unable to open it:
Hello Fifth Grade Families,
We are looking forward to seeing you this Thursday night. We will be spending the
majority of the half hour meeting as a grade level team in the Art room. After
we give our presentation, we will walk down to the fifth grade classrooms where
you can casually look around at your child’s classroom and their work. The homeroom classrooms will be displaying your child's Hopes & Dreams as well as some of their artwork. While you are in your child’s homeroom, you will have the chance to sign up for conferences which will take place on Monday, December 8th. We will be doing conferences differently this year. Because your child has different teachers for the various subjects, you can make a choice with which teacher you would like to conference. For example, if your priority is to discuss your child’s math
progress and he/she has Mr. Rabazzi for math, you might want to set up a conference with Mr. Rabazzi. If you’d like to meet with more than one teacher, you can set up an additional meeting at another time. We are also offering phone conferences this year. We wanted to give you this information so that you can think about with which teacher you’d like to meet. Please contact your child’s homeroom teacher if you need more information about which teachers your child has for which subjects.
Sincerely,
The Fifth Grade Team

Camp Bournedale Update!
It is with disappointment that I write this to inform you that Camp Bournedale has been postponed due the the "high" risk/threat level of EEE in Plymouth and the surrounding communities. Based on this newly announced "high-risk" and for the safety of all Burilngton students, the Burlington Public School administration has decided to reschedule the trip. I am not positive about the new dates but it will most likely be in November, if not, sometime in mid-late October. I realize that this may cause many inconveniences as many of you have volunteered your time and taken days off work to chaperone for this trip. I am sincerely sorry for any problems this has caused. Kids will not need to re-sign up, nor will chaperones. We should have more information on Friday.
Camp Bournedale is still on! More to come....Mrs. Burns

5th Grade Photos Needed by March 1rst!
5TH GRADE “MEMORY BOOK” This is an exciting time for our children as they enjoy their last year at Memorial School. We are in the process of creating a Memory Book and our focus is on gathering photographs for it. If you have photos of our current 5th graders from grades k-5 – individual, small group, or large group – at Memorial or a previous school – sharing them with us will help to make the book even more special for our fifth graders. We will be taking pictures of the fifth graders at school for their personal memory book page, but we also ask that you send in a baby picture or toddler picture and a favorite photo of themselves from any time or place or age (vacation/school/sports, etc.). We ask that you send in the pictures by March 1st in order to get them formatted into the Memory Book. (Please see today’s backpack folder for additional information.)
If you would like to be involved in the Memory Book Committee, please contact Susan Lavacchia at gnLsue@hotmail.com. Thank you for your help and cooperation in making this year’s Memory Book an extra-special one for the first fifth grade class to “graduate” from the new Memorial School! -- Fifth Grade Memory Book Committee
Winter Recess
Winter Recess
Dear Parents,
Winter Recess comes with students sometimes falling in the snow and mud. Sometimes this results in wet pants, socks, etc. Please send in an extra pair of pants to keep in their locker....just in case :)
Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately (hat, mittens, winter jacket) for outdoor play at recess. The children will be going out each day, unless temperatures are unreasonably cold.
