5th Graders Live Tweet with author Jennifer Holmes as the ending to agreat Global Read Aloud of The 14th Goldfish!

This was the first time the students ever "tweeted" before using Mrs Burns' classroom account. They were respectful and thoughtful. Mrs. Holmes answered one of their questions live! These students volunteered their recess time to participate in this live event. Great job!

5th Grade is Ready for the Start of the Global Read Aloud Today


Global Read Aloud Starts Today!  Fifth Grade will be reading, 
The Fourteenth Goldfish by Jennifer L. Holm. Students will be connecting with other classrooms using Edmodo, Kidblog, Twitter, Skype  and Google Classroom.

Paper Blogs Go Live!

Fifth Graders today were able to "publish" their paper blogs today in Mrs. Burns' Reading Class. Students have been working on being a good digital citizen, learning the "ins" and "outs" of blogging, how to write a well written post and how to write good comments. After all our paper practice, we should be ready for blogging with Kidblog and our other Global Read Aloud classrooms!

Constitution Day Preamble Challenge!


5th Graders took the Preamble Challenge today to celebrate Constitution Day. They have been learning about the meaning of those words and what it means to be an American.

MCBA Book Aufio Files Now Available



Want to read the MCBA Book, Capture the Flag, by Kate Messner?  Do you want to be able to have the book to read to you while you read along?  Mrs. Burns has recorded some chapters on Capture the Flag and posted the audio files on this blog!  You can listen by clicking on the MCBA tab and clicking on the Chapters you want to read. You can listen on your iPad with you headphones or with some friends in a book club- either way you can read this book with Mrs. Burns!  You will love it! Its a mystery about the Star Spangled Banner Flag being stolen from a museum and some kids have to solve the mystery. Give it a listen ! Chapters 1-4 done and more coming....

Investwrite Essay Competition


As previously reported, TJ Brosnan won 1rst in the state and 8th in the nation for the Investwrite Competition. There were 10 students who were selected to compete. Out of those remaining 9 submission winners, Mrs Burns Industry Panel consisting of experts who were guest teachers, Mr. Brosnan, Mr. Freitas, and two teachers: Mr. Buckley and Mrs. Burns ranked these remaining essays and picked 1rst, 2nd place, and 3rd place winners. Congrats to all submission winners and many thanks to our industry panel. Here are the winners:


They had to pick a long term stock and tell why it would be a good investment.
Tied for 3rd place: Max- Nike, Chloe- GE and Jensine- P&G.
Second place: Sydney P.- Microsoft First place: Colleen- IRobot

Award Winning Memorial Math Team


Today members of the award winning 5th grade math team presented their team award from Saturday's Middlesex Math Madness Tournament to Mrs. Dressler. This team was awarded 3rd place in the overall team event. Pictured are Yianni, Shashank, Nihal, Aarav and Kris! All of our Memorial competitors made Memorial PROUD!

Middlesex Math Madness Tournament Results

The Middlesex Math Madness Tournament was held on Saturday, June 14th at Memorial School. We had 25 teams competing from 13 districts and all have a good time. However, only a few could leave winners.  

The individual winners were:
1rst place   Shane F from Whitcomb Middle School in Marlborough
2nd place   Jack W from Pine Hill Elementary in Sherborn
3rd place    Sreetej D from John F. Ryan Middle School in Tewksbury

The team/group winners were:

1rst place   Whitcomb Middle School in Marlborough
2nd place   Pine Hill Elementary in Sherborn
3rd place    Memorial Elementary, Burlington !!!!

and Shashank U. Also pictured are Mrs. Burns, Mrs. Olshaw and Mrs. Magliozzi who ran the tournament. You make Memorial Proud!

Below is both of our 5th grade teams before the competition. There was also representing Burlington, a 4th grade team, a team from MSMS and a team from Fox Hill Elementary. Everyone did great and scored high points for a very difficult competition.

Its amazing that 125 students and their teachers and parents showed up on a Saturday to do math! Everyone had a great time with the hard math challenges and everyone got a certificate and a tournament t-shirt.
